Denmark

Best of Denmark

We visited Copenhagen, Denmark for 5 days between October 25 and 29, 2013. Although our stay in this country of 406 islands was so short, our days there were full of sunshine and enjoyments as we navigated the capital making use of their comprehensive public transport, and pedestrian/bike friendly streets. When we think of Denmark interesting facts about this progressive country are stuck in our minds: Denmark is a constitutional monarchy, the death penalty does not exist, it was the first country to legalize pornography, and the country has one of the highest percentages of electoral participation in the world, 87%.

In terms of history, it is important to recall that Denmark endure many years of war against Sweden, as these two kingdoms were always trying to attain full control of the Baltic region. While absolute monarchs were introduced in several European countries, Denmark was the only nation with a written constitution. Denmark remained neutral during War World I and it was occupied by Germany between April 9, 1940 and May 5, 1945.

Copenhagen was a lovely city to explore and it felt at all times like a great place to live in! The sculpture of the little mermaid at the waterfront of this home of Vikings is a tempting invitation to come back 😉
