Sights and Activities
Below are the places we saw and activities completed while visiting Denmark:
Copenhagen
Nationalmuseet – National Museum: we went through an extensive collection of Danish artefacts that dated between 1660 and 2000.
Nyhavn Neighborhood: we walked around this 17th-century waterfront district filled with brightly colored townhouses.
Gefion Fountain: this fountain features the goddess Gefion, going through the island of Zealand with her four sons as oxen.
Little Mermaid Statue: this statue depicts the character of the famed book by Den Lille Havfrue.
Cristiania Neighborhood: also known as Freetown Cristiania, it is the first of many self-proclaimed neighborhoods in Denmark. We walked around this unique neighborhood that is regulated by a special law which transfers the supervision of the area from the municipality of the city to the state. The idea of the freetown is to be a self-sustained, self-governed community and to be able to trade cannabis freely, which we noticed throughout. Recently authorities have been in negotiation to try to “normalize” their status.
Kronborg Slot – Castle: this castle was made famous as the Elsinore Castle of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. We strolled through the complex while the soldiers were testing the canons.
