Below are our expenses and how they compared to our budget (in USD):
Cost of Transportation: $81 versus Budgeted: $200
Cost of Visa: $94 versus Budgeted: $60
Cost per day: $41 versus Budgeted: $49
Costa Rica is the most expensive country in Central America and one of the more expensive in Latin America. For this reason, we did not travel too much in the country, which resulted in lower costs in transportation. Although we did not pay to enter into the country, we exited the country two times (flight to Cuba and overland to Nicaragua), which they charge an exit tax that was more than what we budgeted. CouchSurfing and staying with some friends helped with our daily costs. All these savings resulted in a 9% savings in the overall country budget.
