Best of Kenya
We visited Kenya for 11 days starting March 13, 2014. We traveled by bus making stops in Naivaisha and Nairobi. Entering through the southwest of the country we were mesmerized by the look of the magical umbrella trees over the green savanna. Beautiful Naivasha surrounded by its scenic lake, wildlife, and rose plantations gave us a weekend of joys with friends and first time adventures to never forget. Our firsts included: water skiing at this lake full of hippopotamus, Sal did amazing from his first attempt while Gisela accomplished a unique style of butt skiing; playing rugby; and visiting a casino for the first time in our entire world trip, we tried our luck at a black jack table hoping to make extra money to extend the journey for another year! Making minimum bets of $1.25 USD per hand did not make much progress or damage to our budget but the night was full of fun, which is always the most precious gain! Based in Naivasha, we also visited Hells Gate National Park, a land of geothermal activity and spectacular rock formations that inspired the Lion King movie. This unique wildlife reserve can be accessed by bicycle or foot allowing visitors to enjoy nature as close as possible. We hiked in between gorges and felt infatuated with the smooth textures and shapes. A bath in the milky waters hot spring in the park was the perfect ending to our adventure.
Nairobi has been one of very few cities in Africa where we haven’t been bombarded by people trying to sell us things since our arrival. We walked everywhere, feeling free, safe, and happy. Nairobi is a cosmopolitan city of tall buildings, streets, and many trees. We were pleased to drive by the Karura forest, one of the largest in the world within city limits. The environmentalist Wangari Maathai made the preservation of this forest possible and she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace. Wangari Maathai was the first African woman and the first environmentalist to win the prize. Our entire stay in Nairobi was pleasant, we loved the way in which reality completely dismantled the negative image that the media made us believe of this city. This positive experience brought back to life one of our greatest traveling lessons: to give yourself the chance to discover places, don’t fall for what others want you to believe, living in fear takes you nowhere!
Kenya reached independence from Britain on December 12, 1963. Jomo Kenyatta was sworn as Kenya’s president after the first ever multiracial election in the country. Kenya mobilized important projects, like the establishment of the East African Community with Tanzania and Uganda in 1967. Until today, the nation holds down on an idealized image of Kenyatta’s government, despite his excessive bias favoring his own tribe and the political corruption, by picturing him in all bills and coins of the country. Kenyatta ruled the country until his death in 1978 and then Daniel Arap Moi became president and remained in power for the next 20 years. Moi’s government was characterized by lack of democracy after a constitutional amendment in 1982 made Kenya a one-party state. The history of Kenya has been mark by political corruption and violence. On August 7, 1998, for the first time, al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden became the focus of international attention after the attack to the US embassy in Nairobi. Since 2011, the country has been in war against al-Shabaab, an extremist Islamic group from Somalia affiliated to al-Qaeda. Most recently, Kenya’s current president is facing international charges for abuse of power and violation of human rights against a Kenyan tribe. Although Kenya’s financial future seems promising, political corruption, and ethnic conflicts continue costing a lot to the country.
We left Kenya with the curiosity and the temptation of further exploring it. Our unfulfilled desire of staying longer hopes one day we could be back 😉
