Canyoning in Routeburn

Canyoning involves traveling down creeks or streams within a canyon by a variety of means: walking, scrambling, climbing, abseiling/rappeling, jumping, and swimming. It is a cross between white water rafting, bungy jumping, and rock climbing. This was one of the best activities we experienced in New Zealand, a country that offers a broad number of extreme adventures.

We shared our journey through the Routeburn Canyon with 5 other travelers coming from Netherlands and the US. Like us, they were curious about this sport and excited to try it for the first time. We were guided and supported by tour guides and photographers with years of experience in canyoning. They were fun and put our safety as a priority at all times.

Canyoning was an opportunity to travel along ice cold blue water and beautiful sculptured walls created by eroded bedrock. This was a perfect way to test our limits while recognizing how vulnerable we are under the imminent strength of nature and a chance to feel the power of water through all our senses while enjoying the risk of being alive. We will never forget the sound, colors, temperature, shapes, and speed of the water in the canyon!

Images can tell more than words, so here is a little taste of our canyoning experience. We hope it inspires you to take the challenge šŸ˜‰
