Below are our expenses and how they compared to our budget (in USD):
Cost of Transportation: $953 versus Budgeted: $200
Cost per day: $75 versus Budgeted: $88
Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe and we underestimated. It was the only country, besides the Nordic countries, where we bought a rail pass and it was not cheap! We did end up saving on transportation with the pass, but we still went over budget on the cost of transportation. We were fortunate to be hosted by friends and through CouchSurfing the majority of the time; otherwise our daily costs would have gone through the roof. This helped us limit the bleeding to 12% over the country’s budget.
