Below are our expenses and how they compared to our budget (in USD):
Flight Cost: $1,819 versus Budgeted: $1,600
Cost of Transportation: $729 versus Budgeted: $600
Cost per day: $35 versus Budgeted: $56
Our original plan was to fly from Europe into Brazil, but we did neither. It turned out that our route flowed better if we flew from Morocco directly to Argentina and although we spent more than what we had budgeted for on the flight, we most likely saved on transportation in Europe and hopefully in the future in South America. Traversing this long country by bus all the way to Patagonia was costly and hence going over budget in the transportation budget. What did help our wallet was the favorable exchange rate in the black market that the country is currently experiencing with the US dollar, known as the ‘blue.’ This along with finding accommodation with friends, CouchSurfing, AirBnB, and camping helped us save on our daily costs. And despite staying in the country twice as long as anticipated, we only over spent by 18% of the overall country budget.
